Our Teaching Philosophy (continued)We respect all Argentine tango styles: salon, milonguero, nuevo, fantasia, stage performance - the list is long. We cherish the improvisational essence of tango and support dancers creating their own tango and tangos, and their own unique style. We want the dance to be fun and meaningful for everyone and a vehicle for expressing their emotions, for being fit, for finding happiness as two people becoming one for awhile, being part of a community, and being able to travel and meet dancers around the world.
We want to assist people to improve their technique and musicality - and their navigational skills as part of the tango community on the dancefloor in an environment of respect, more than a few laughs, and as little stress as possible.
We believe in fostering respect for all who learn and all who teach, and we encourage students to take classes from other teachers in our community and around the world as part of their learning experience. We recommend students take intensive workshops with the great tango performers and teachers of Buenos Aires and the world whenever possible and watch as much dancing by the great dancers and all dancers as possible.
We ask experienced dancers to help along newcomers and other less experienced dancers, and try to ensure no one is forgotten at a milonga. And we ask all dancers to cherish those who support their dance experience - the cafe owners, hall owners and managers, and their staff, the tango societies, the volunteer workers, those who bring in visiting teachers, the DJs, the organizers of tangofests, the artists who give their creativity to tango environments and interpretation, the newspapers and magazines that provide free notices of tango events - in short, everybody! |
Why We Dance
(continued)
The music drew us and promised what for us came to pass: the tango is a way of dancing the yearning we all feel as individuals, that longing for connection and union; in that sense it's a meditation, a path out of being alone and into the moment, like children's play. It is physical and sensual, it is romantic, it is dramatic, it is life's rhythm, it is darker emotions, it is wit and good cheer (especially the milonga), it is grace and beauty. It is the deep language of the sexes, it is collaboration and exploration by two people, and by a community on the dance floor. It is creativity and freedom and no barriers. It is an art and an esthetic marvel. It is mind and body, young and old, male and female and beyond gender, beyond class and job and skin colour and language and religion and money and time.
This is why we dance.
